It started the day my manager told me I was going to be laid off, adding that the client had chosen the other supervisor (something that I shouldn't have to know). Nothing was official yet, I was still working, but the narrative was already set. After that, my role became unclear. I was asked to keep helping the “chosen” supervisor to build their confidence, which I agreed to in the name of professionalism. But slowly, tasks within my scope were taken over, without discussion, feedback, or reminders. I started to look disengaged, not because I lacked contribution, but because the space to contribute was quietly removed. That’s when I realized that sometimes “helping” isn’t collaboration, it’s positioning. Now my focus is simple: stay until payday, then be done. Not every environment is worth fighting for. Has anyone experienced being asked to stay “professional” while being prepared to exit?
